INDIAN WELLS, Calif., April 9, 2007 -- The 33rd edition of the 2008 Pacific Life Open was the most successful tournament in its history and set milestones in attendance and website traffic, while also delivering new off-court activities to fans.
For the second year in a row, the Pacific Life Open’s attendance topped 300,000, with the final total of 331,269. Attendance has grown by ten fold since the beginning of the event in 1976 when 30,000 people attended the tournament. The all-time day (21,512) and night (16,386) session attendance records were set on Saturday, March 15, making this event the most-attended tournament in the world outside of the four Grand Slams.
There were a lot of people at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden over the two-week event, but the traffic at www.PacificLifeOpen.com, the official tournament website, was even greater, attracting more than six million visits, an increase of 38% from 2007. One of the most popular features on the website was the live scoring, which recorded 2,847,684 visits, an increase of 58% from 2007.
While people were turning to the website for information in record fashion, a number of people also turned to Fox Sports Net (FSN) for coverage of the tournament. Almost 300,000 people tuned in for the men's final and specific markets around the country including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami all saw strong viewership numbers throughout the event that represent an increase from previous years.
In addition, the off-court activity was increased at this year’s event and included a record level of retail space (19,000 feet), new and different food options from Levy Restaurants, a fashion show from FILA and Los Angeles designer Trina Turk, on-court text-to-win programs from Bulova, FILA and the City of Indian Wells, and an all new Kids Day that was attended by more than 800 kids from the Coachella Valley.
Next year’s event is scheduled for March 9-22, 2009, at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, and will again feature more than 300 of the best players in the world offering fans incredible action in a desert oasis.
