Federer Celebrates Ljubicic's Birthday With a Win

Roger Federer

World No. 1 Roger Federer continued his impressive campaign to reclaim his Pacific Life Open title, showing no mercy in his fourth round match against birthday boy Ivan Ljubicic on Wednesday in Indian Wells.

Federer, who posted straight sets wins over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Nicolas Mahut in his first two matches, broke Ljubicic three times in 11 chances en route to the 6-3, 6-4 win. He improved his career record against the 29-year-old Ljubicic to 12-3, including wins in their last nine meetings.

The 26-year-old Swiss won three consecutive titles in Indian Wells from 2004-06 before bowing out in his second round opener last year against Argentine Guillermo Canas. Federer is looking to win his first title of the 2008 ATP season after falling in the semifinals at the Australian Open and the first round in Dubai.

He takes an 8-2 lifetime record into his quarterfinal match against German Tommy Haas. Haas’ wins came in two of their first three matchups, in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics and in 2002 at the Australian Open.

Haas exacted a bit of payback in his fourth round match against British No. 1 Andy Murray, who saved two match points last year against Haas in Indian Wells to advance to the semifinals. This time around, Haas broke Murray to go up 5-4 in the third set and closed out the match on serve, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

“It's nice to get your revenge back at the same place, pretty much,” said Haas. “It took a year for us to go back and battle at it again. It was another great match, very exciting, and just came down to a few big points here and there. I saved a lot of break points in the third, and so did he, and I came up with the goods at the right time, which was great.”

The former World No. 2 is enjoying his most successful run since undergoing shoulder surgery last November, having won only two ATP matches through four tournament appearance this season coming into the Pacific Life Open. He posted the first big upset of the men’s draw when he ousted top American Andy Roddick.

He said: “For me every day is just important to feel kind of healthy and going out there and hit my shots and hit my serves without feeling anything in my shoulder. I need to keep telling myself that that's really the most important thing for me.”

American Mardy Fish extended his run at the Pacific Life Open by ousting two-time champion Lleyton Hewitt in another fourth round epic. Neither player dropped serve through the last 19 games, forcing the match into a third set tie-break. Fish entered the decider with a 0-5 mark in tie-breaks this season, but pulled through for the 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(4) win.

Fish will next meet World No. 7 David Nalbandian, who avenged his Australian Open defeat against Spanish No. 22 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero. After being extended to a third set tie-break in his other two matches this week, Nalbandian welcomed a quick 6-2, 6-2 outcome as he took his ATP Masters Series winning streak to 15 matches.

Nalbandian clinched back-to-back ATP Masters Series shields at Madrid and Paris to finish 2007 season, posting wins over Federer and World No. 2 Rafael Nadal at both events.
