Serbian stars Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, respectively seeded first and third, closed out straight sets wins on Monday in Indian Wells to secure their fourth round spots at the Pacific Life Open.
Jankovic put together another commanding performance, posting her second straight 58-minute victory as she defeated Japan’s Ai Sugiyama, 6-1, 6-1. In Jankovic’s second round opening match on Saturday, she also limited her opponent to just two games.
“I was very focused on the court, and I really tried to do my job out there,” said Jankovic. “I didn't want to let her get into the match, so I was just playing one point at a time. Especially with the wind you really have to. You cannot lose your concentration because as soon as you do that you start making a lot of errors, and then you lose your rhythm.”
Jankovic has reached the quarterfinals or better in her five other tournaments this season, including the semifinals at the Australian Open and Dubai, but has never advanced beyond the fourth round in Indian Wells. She will attempt to do so for the first time when she encounters 20th-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina.
In the evening session, Ivanovic was broken twice in the opening set against Italian Tathiana Garbin but quickly recovered from her shaky start. She dropped just four points on serve in the second set to clinch the 6-3, 6-0 win.
“I'm definitely better than my game yesterday,” Ivanovic said. “That's very positive, and I finished the match strong and did some things I was practicing and working on, so I'm happy about that.”
Sixth seed Marion Bartoli of France held off a late surge by German Angelique Kerber to advance, 6-3, 7-6(3), while her fourth round opponent, American Lindsay Davenport, was extended to three sets by Chinese Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan before prevailing, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
“I'm happy to walk off the court playing the way I did the last four games and taking back control and playing better,” said Davenport. “But I was just getting so frustrated the second set, which next time hopefully I can keep my cool a little better and focus in on the task at hand.”
The 31-year-old Davenport, who is making her 14th main draw appearance at this event, is looking to reach the Pacific Life Open final for the seventh time in her career. She won the title in 1997 and again in 2000.
Australian Casey Dellacqua extended her run in her desert debut, moving through to the fourth round when No. 32 seeded Austrian Tamira Paszek retired while trailing 6-1, 4-0. Dellacqua, who achieved a surprising fourth round showing at the Australian Open with a win over former World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, posted an upset over seventh-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova in her second round match.
She next faces No. 12 seed Vera Zvonareva, who breezed through her all-Russian match against qualifier Galina Voskoboeva, 6-0, 6-3. In another third round meeting between compatriots, Italian Francesca Schiavone dispatched Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4.
