Ginepri Makes Confident Start Against Spadea

Robby Ginepri

American wild card Robby Ginepri put together a convincing display on the opening day of ATP action, Thursday at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, overwhelming compatriot Vince Spadea 6-1, 6-1 in 63 minutes.

The former World No. 15 was relegated to the qualifying rounds in the first month of the ATP season after falling outside of the Top 100, but has been steadily climbing up the rankings – from No. 171 to No. 91 – after turning in semifinal finishes in all three of his ATP main draw appearances this season.

The 25-year-old Ginepri made his best showing at the Pacific Life Open in his event debut in 2003, defeating former World No. 1 Marat Safin before losing to Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals. He faces another former World No. 1, Spaniard Carlos Moya, in the next round.

Another wild card, 18-year-old Donald Young, notched his first match win at an ATP Masters Series event as he converted on both his break point opportunities to defeat fellow American Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 6-4 in 61 minutes. Young reached his first career ATP quarterfinal two weeks ago in Memphis.

Meanwhile, American Jesse Levine provided Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka with a fierce challenge before succumbing in two hours and 37 minutes. Wawrinka broke the 20-year-old wild card for the fifth time in the match to record the 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman, the oldest player in the draw with his 36th birthday just a week away, defeated Italian Filippo Volandri 6-3, 7-6(5) to set up a second round match against No. 16 seed Guillermo Canas.

Compatriot Robin Soderling also advanced in straight sets in his first round match against Sebastien Grosjean, and next faces another Frenchman, No. 8 seed Richard Gasquet. Soderling defeated Gasquet in Marseille last month en route to a runner-up finish.

Other winners Thursday included Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo and Italian Andreas Seppi, who will respectively encounter defending champion Rafael Nadal and runner-up Novak Djokovic in the second round.
