American women took full advantage of their Pacific Life Open wild card entries, Thursday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with Vania King, Melanie Oudin and Ahsha Rolle winning their first round matches.
Vania King led the way on Stadium 1 as she turned in a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Luxembourg’s Anne Kremer. The 32-year-old Kremer won the first three games of the decisive set before the 19-year-old California native roared back to take the next five. King clinched the win in two hours and 30 minutes with an ace on match point.
Sixteen-year-old Melanie Oudin won in her event debut as she defeated Estonia’s Maret Ani 7-5, 6-2, while Ahsha Rolle eased to a 6-2, 6-2 win over another American wild card, Madison Brengle. With her win, Rolle earned the most challenging second round match-up of her compatriots, set to face Serb No. 3 seed Jelena Jankovic next.
Meanwhile, Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru earned the unenviable task of playing top seed Ana Ivanovic in the Serb’s opening match. Olaru defeated China’s Meng Yuan, 6-4, 6-4.
Argentine Gisela Dulko,a two-time Indian Wells quarterfinalist, will also face a tough second round opponent in American Lindsay Davenport after turning around a shaky start to defeat American lucky loser Julie Ditty 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The 31-year-old Davenport recently won her 55th career Tour singles title, in Memphis, and is looking to reach the Pacific Life Open final for the seventh time in her career. She won the title in 1997 and 2000.
