Czechs, Russians Complete Strong Showings in Qualies

Iveta Benesova

Czech Iveta Benesova will appear in the singles main draw at the Pacific Life Open for the fifth straight year after coming back to defeat American Julie Ditty 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the final round of women’s qualifying, Tuesday at the Pacific Life Open.

Benesova, who last year finished outside the Top 100 for the first time since 2003, has twice reached the third round at the Pacific Life Open. In 2004, she retired at that stage in her match against compatriot and fellow qualifier Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who bowed out to Justine Henin in the ensuing round.

Zahlavova Strycova ensured her place in the main draw as she produced a 6-4, 6-4 win over British No. 1 Katie O’brien on Tuesday.

Russian Alla Kudryavtseva, the No. 5 seed in the qualification draw, battled her way into the main draw after being taken to a third-set tie-break by American wild card Riza Zalamadea. She ultimately closed out the match 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) to earn her first main draw berth at the event.

Seventh-seeded Colombian Catalian Castano had an easier time against France’s Olivia Sanchez, converting on five of her 11 break point chances to deliver the 6-4, 6-1 win.

Rounding out the women’s qualifiers are Germans Julia Schruff and Sabine Lisicki; Hungarians Greta Arn and Melinda Czink; Russians Evgeniya Rodina and Galina Voskoboeva; Frenchwoman Stephanie Cohen-Aloro and Czech Renata Voracova.
